Smokeless Ovoids

Smokeless fuel sample ovoidsSmokeless ovoids, sometimes referred to as smokeless ovals, are a smokeless anthracite based solid fuel for use on open fires and in multi-fuel stoves and selected other cookers.

All these fuels have to have a sulphur content of less than 2% and are authorized as 'smokeless' by DEFRA / HETAS

There are a number of smokeless fuel products available on the market, many of which are listed below. Please check with your coal merchant to ensure you order a suitable smokeless fuel for your multi fuel stove or other appliance.

Excel

A HETAS approved premium medium-sized square-shaped briquette produced by Oxbow Coal Ltd - easy to light with a good heat output - suitable for open fires, closed appliances and multifuel stoves.

Newheat

A HETAS approved smokeless 100gram ovoid produced by Oxbow Coal Ltd that replaced Pureheat - easy to light with a long burn, low ash and a good heat output - suitable for room heaters, multifuel stoves, closed appliances and cookers, but not AGA cookers.

Homefire

Hexagonal shaped ovoid produced by Coal Products Ltd - lights easily and burns with an attractive glowing flame - open fires - 25% less CO2 emissions than house coal.

Homefire Ovals

A multi-purpose ovoid identified by 2 parallel lines across the middle of the ovoid - produced by Coal Products Ltd - open fires, multi-fuel stoves - high heat output with long refuelling intervals due to slow burning rate - 25% less CO2 emissions than house coal.

Ecoal

Multi-purpose hexagonal shaped ovoid made from solid fuel +30% renewable materials - produced by Coal Products Ltd - 25% less CO2 emissions than house coal.

Ancit

High quality anthracite based ovoid produced by Coal Products Ltd - slow burning with high heat output - closed appliances, room heaters, multi-fuel stoves, cookers and AGA cookers.

Phurnacite

High quality anthracite based ovoid produced by Coal Products Ltd - slow burning with high heat output - closed appliances, room heaters, multi-fuel stoves, cookers and AGA cookers. Recogniseable by the two parallel longitudinal lines on both sides of the ovoid.

Taybrite

Produced by Coal Products Ltd - sometimes sold as 'Surefire' - easy to light and slow burning - most closed appliances, but not AGA cookers.

Supertherm

A premium ovoid produced by Coal Products Ltd - open fires and multi-fuel stoves.

Multiheat

An economy priced mix of 2 different sized ovoids produced by Coal Products Ltd - open fires and multi-fuel stoves.

Briteheat

An economy priced ovoid produced by Coal Products Ltd - most closed appliances, but not AGA cookers.

Maxibrite

A small 34 gram anthracite based ovoid produced by Maxibrite Ltd - high heat output and slow burning - recogniseable by the 'M' marking on each ovoid - closed appliances, multi-fuel stoves, cookers and AGA cookers.  Sulphur content: less than 2%  Calorific value: 33,000 kJ/kg

Dual Smokeless

Good quality anthracite based ovoid produced by CPL Ltd - easy to light, clean burning and good heat output - closed appliances, multi-fuel stoves and cookers, but not AGA cookers.   

Homeflame

A medium-priced anthracite-based ovoid produced by Maxibrite Ltd - closed appliances, multi-fuel stoves, cookers, but not AGA cookers.  
Sulphur content:  less than 2%  

Calero (formerly: Therma)

A small 26 gram anthracite based ovoid - produced by Maxibrite Ltd - closed appliances, multi-fuel stoves, cookers, but not AGA cookers -              Sulphur content:  less than 2%  Calorific value:  33,000kJ/kg

Coalite Newflame Plus

A large 110 gram pillow shaped ovoid - produced by Maxibrite Ltd - a muli-purpose fuel - easy to light, good heat output and long lasting - burns with an attractive flame - open fires, room heaters and multi-fuel stoves.  Sulphur content:  less than 2%  Calorific value:  32,500kJ/kg

Sunbrite Coke

A hard coke produced by the Monkton Coke Co. - the larger Doubles size is suitable for closed appliances, including AGA cookers - this fuel is very dense and needs a good supply of firelighters to get it going and a good appliance air supply to keep it going - burns very slowly with a high heat output. The smaller Singles size has similar lighting and burning characteristics and is usually burnt on blacksmith's forges. 

Cosycoke

A 50/50 mix of Sunbrite Doubles and imported petroleum coke doubles - produced by the Monkton Coke Co. - easier to light than Sunbrite Doubles, but will burn more quickly due to the petroleum coke content - high heat output - closed appliances and cookers, but not AGA cookers.

Newburn

A medium-sized, cold-cure, DEFRA and HETAS authorized ovoid produced by M & G Solid Fuels llp - a premium smokeless product for open fires, multifuel stoves and closed appliances (but not AGA cookers).
